Friday is the best day to cross at San Ysidro

By Alan Scott · Who makes this · Tijuana, Baja California ·

Ask anyone how the border looks on a weekend and they'll tell you Friday is hopeless. It's what we all assume: Friday, everyone getting off work, everyone crossing.

The data says the opposite. Friday is the best day of the week, and not by a little.

The numbers

We took the wait times U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes for the General passenger lane at San Ysidro, northbound, and averaged every day of the week across three and a half years — roughly 181 days for each weekday.

DayAverage
Friday71 min ← the best
Thursday77 min
Wednesday79 min
Tuesday86 min
Monday97 min
Saturday100 min
Sunday102 min

Thirty-one minutes separate Friday from Sunday. That's a 43% difference on the same drive.

Why Friday isn't what you think

Friday traffic is spread across the whole day. People leave early, people leave late, people leave at lunch. Nobody's schedule agrees with anyone else's.

Sunday is the opposite: everyone comes back at the same time. The whole weekend piles into one afternoon window, and that's what pushes the daily average up.

So the Friday reputation isn't wrong about the feeling — Friday evening genuinely is bad. It's wrong about the day.

What this data does NOT tell you

It doesn't tell you what time to go. This is a full-day average. A Friday averaging 71 minutes could have had a brutal 5 p.m. and an empty 10 a.m. We can't tell you the hour from this data, and we're not going to guess. Here's the full explanation of why nobody can, yet

It's not a forecast. It's what already happened, 181 times per weekday. Next Friday could be terrible.

And it's only the General lane, northbound. SENTRI behaves completely differently — it averages 14 minutes — and crossing on foot follows a different pattern entirely: the worst day on foot is Saturday, not Sunday. More on that here

So what do you do with it

  • If you can pick your day, pick Friday. Or Thursday, which is a close second.
  • Avoid Sunday and Saturday. They're the two worst, and by a wide margin.
  • Monday is worse than you'd expect — 97 minutes, nearly as bad as the weekend.
