What you should know about Otay Mesa
🟢 1 · Otay is 24 minutes faster than San Ysidro
And it's the single most useful number on this site:
| Crossing | A normal day |
|---|---|
| San Ysidro | 85.0 min |
| Otay Mesa | 60.6 min |
| Tecate | 46.7 min |
Twenty-four minutes of median, every day. If you cross five times a week and don't care which crossing you use, that's two hours of your life per week.
And unlike Tecate, Otay does have SENTRI (13.2 minutes, essentially the same as San Ysidro).
2 · Friday is the best day, same as San Ysidro
| Day | Median |
|---|---|
| Friday | 50.7 min ← best |
| Thursday | 55.9 min |
| Wednesday | 56.3 min |
| Tuesday | 58.8 min |
| Saturday | 63.7 min |
| Monday | 66.0 min |
| Sunday | 74.0 min ← worst |
The spread is tighter than at San Ysidro: 50.7 to 74 is 23 minutes, against San Ysidro's 36. Otay is steadier: fewer great days, fewer terrible ones.
🔴 3 · But the worst day ever recorded belongs to Otay, not San Ysidro
270 minutes. Four and a half hours.
| Crossing | Worst day recorded |
|---|---|
| Otay Mesa | 270 min |
| Tecate | 213 min |
| San Ysidro | 195 min |
Otay is steadier day to day and more brutal at its worst. It's the crossing that fails you least and that can fail you hardest.
4 · It's the only one with freight lanes, and that matters even if you don't drive a truck
Otay Mesa is the region's commercial crossing:
| Lane | A normal day |
|---|---|
| Commercial standard | 20.0 min |
| Commercial FAST | 14.4 min |
If you haul freight, this is your crossing — and it's the only one of the three where FAST exists. If you don't, it's worth knowing that a lot of cargo traffic is moving alongside you.
🔴 5 · And Otay changed in 2026 too — but only for cars
| January–July | Median |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 57.5 min |
| 2024 | 58.5 min |
| 2025 | 55.6 min ← the best |
| 2026 | 74.6 min |
34% worse than last year. Otay had been stable for three years and then moved in 2026: January and March came out normal, and from May onward every month landed far above — May +39%, June +74%, July +41%.
🔥 And here's what makes Otay the most interesting of the three
Same crossing, same year: freight got faster and cars got slower.
| Lane | Jan–Jul 2025 | Jan–Jul 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car (General) | 55.6 min | 74.6 min | +34% |
| SENTRI | 13.4 min | 17.4 min | +30% |
| Pedestrian | 16.7 min | 20.2 min | +21% |
| Commercial standard | 21.8 min | 19.4 min | −11% (improved) |
| Commercial FAST | 14.4 min | 11.7 min | −19% (improved) |
Trucks are moving faster than last year. Cars, 34% slower.
🔴 That rules out Otay simply being overwhelmed. If it were volume or short staffing, freight would fall as hard as cars or harder. The opposite happened.
It's still faster than San Ysidro — in July, by 25 minutes. The full measurement is here
The lanes at Otay Mesa
| Lane | A normal day | A good day | A bad day | Worst seen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car (General) | 60.6 min | 48.3 min | 74.6 min | 270 min |
| SENTRI | 13.2 min | 10.6 min | 16.6 min | 38.1 min |
| Pedestrian | 21.1 min | 14.9 min | 28.5 min | 64.2 min |
| Commercial standard | 20.0 min | 14.2 min | 30.5 min | 339.7 min |
| Commercial FAST | 14.4 min | 10.0 min | 19.3 min | 55.0 min |
| Pedestrian Ready | ❌ doesn't exist |
That 339.7-minute commercial maximum is nearly six hours. It isn't an error: it's in the data.
What this data does NOT tell you
It doesn't tell you what time of day. These are full-day averages. Here's why nobody can tell you yet
🔴 It doesn't tell you why Otay got 34% worse. We measured that it did, not the cause. We know the passenger lanes got worse and the freight lanes got better, which rules out general saturation — but ruling out one explanation isn't having another. We won't over-interpret it.
It says nothing about southbound. No official source. We don't invent one.
And it doesn't tell you whether the detour is worth it. Otay saves 24 minutes of line, but it's farther for most people. If it's 20 extra minutes of driving, the savings cancel out. You know that; we don't.
How to cross Otay better
- Friday or Thursday, if you can choose
- Sunday is the worst, though not as brutal as at the other two
- SENTRI is worth it here, unlike at Tecate
- On foot it's the slowest of the three (21 min against Tecate's 6). If you're walking, this isn't your best option
- 🟢 If you haul freight, 2026 has been good to you — FAST is 19% faster than last year
- And consider the drive: the 24 minutes you save can disappear behind the wheel

Direction: northbound. 🔴 20 days are missing from the public record: no data at all from March 27 to April 15, 2026, at any crossing or in any lane.
