What you should know about San Ysidro
1 · It's the slowest of the three, by a lot
| Crossing | A normal day |
|---|---|
| San Ysidro | 85.0 min |
| Otay Mesa | 60.6 min |
| Tecate | 46.7 min |
An hour and a half, median. Otay saves you 24 minutes and Tecate 38 — if they're anywhere near you, which is the whole question.
But San Ysidro also has the most lanes, and the single fastest lane on the entire border.
🟢 2 · It has the only Pedestrian Ready Lane, and it's 3 minutes
This is the worst-kept secret on the border:
| Lane | A normal day |
|---|---|
| Pedestrian Ready Lane | 3.1 min |
| Pedestrian (general) | 18.5 min |
| SENTRI | 13.5 min |
| Car (General) | 85.0 min |
Three minutes. Against an hour and a half in a car.
Neither Otay nor Tecate has it. If you have Ready Lane and can walk across, that's the difference between 3 minutes and 85.
If you're coming from the U.S. side: this is the argument for parking in San Ysidro, walking across, and using Uber or the taxis on the Tijuana side — and for taking the Blue Line trolley back up. The 82 minutes you save are not a rounding error.
3 · Friday is the best day, and it's counterintuitive
| Day | Median |
|---|---|
| Friday | 67.7 min ← best |
| Thursday | 76.8 min |
| Wednesday | 77.6 min |
| Tuesday | 83.3 min |
| Monday | 96.0 min |
| Saturday | 99.6 min |
| Sunday | 103.8 min ← worst |
Everyone assumes Friday is hopeless. It's the best day of the week, by 36 minutes against Sunday. Full explanation here
🔴 4 · And it's running 27% worse than last year
| January–July | Median |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 91.8 min |
| 2024 | 84.8 min |
| 2025 | 73.6 min ← the best |
| 2026 | 93.2 min |
2025 was the best of the four years, and 2026 erased it completely: back to 2023 levels.
And it wasn't even across the year. January 2026 was 12% better than January 2025. From May onward every month landed far above the same month last year, and the gap widened: May +20%, June +56%, July +34%, and the first 9 days of August +62%.
⚠️ The uncomfortable part: San Ysidro is the LEAST affected of the three. Otay is up 34% and Tecate 84%. We measured it here
🟢 And it didn't happen to every lane. The Pedestrian Ready Lane went up 3% — which is to say it didn't move — while the car lane next to it went up 27%.
5 · The extreme days
| One day in four | better than 66 min |
|---|---|
| One day in four | worse than 105 min |
| One day in ten | worse than 129 min |
| The worst on record | 195 min (March 24, 2023 — an ordinary Friday) |
🔴 That 195-minute Friday had no holiday near it, no long weekend, nothing. Probably a lane closure or a special operation. We don't know.
And it's the best argument for checking the number at the top instead of trusting an average: the border can blow up on an ordinary day, with no warning.
The lanes at San Ysidro
| Lane | A normal day | A good day | A bad day | Worst seen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car (General) | 85.0 min | 66.1 min | 104.7 min | 195 min |
| SENTRI | 13.5 min | 11.9 min | 15.2 min | 43.8 min |
| Pedestrian | 18.5 min | 13.0 min | 25.3 min | 76.3 min |
| Pedestrian Ready | 3.1 min | 2.6 min | 4.4 min | 36.9 min |
| Commercial | ❌ doesn't exist |
"Good day" and "bad day" are the quartiles: one day in four comes out better than the good column, and one in four worse than the bad one.
🔴 And there are two more crossings CBP reports separately that are NOT in this table: the Cross Border Express — the pedestrian bridge to the Tijuana airport — and PedWest, the western pedestrian crossing, open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. We're going to add them; today they're missing, which is why we're saying so.
What this data does NOT tell you
It doesn't tell you what time of day, and at San Ysidro that matters more than anywhere else, because the volume concentrates around work shifts. Here's why nobody can tell you yet
🔴 It doesn't tell you why it went up 27%. We measured that it did, not the cause. We won't speculate about staffing or policy with data that can't support it.
It says nothing about southbound. There's no official source. We don't invent one.
It excludes Cross Border Express and PedWest, which are reported separately.
How to cross San Ysidro better
- Friday or Thursday. Friday saves 36 minutes against Sunday
- Avoid Sunday, Saturday and Monday: all three above 96 minutes
- 🟢 If you have Ready Lane and can go on foot: 3 minutes. It's the best thing that exists on this border
- On foot without Ready Lane is still 18 minutes against 85 in a car
- And on foot the worst day is Saturday, not Sunday — it's a different pattern

Sources
Current times: U.S. Customs and Border Protection, port 250401. 🔴 CBP publishes once an hour, so the number can be up to 59 minutes old — ours and any app's. That's why it always carries its timestamp. History: SANDAG · January 29, 2023 to August 9, 2026. Direction: northbound. 🔴 20 days are missing from the public record: there is no data at all from March 27 to April 15, 2026, at any crossing or in any lane. It's a source failure, and in year-over-year comparisons that window is excluded from every year. We explain it here
