What you should know about Tecate
🔴 1 · Tecate has no SENTRI
And this changes decisions. If you have SENTRI and you're thinking about Tecate because it sounds calmer: that lane does not exist there. You'll be in the general lane like everyone else.
At San Ysidro SENTRI averages 13.5 minutes and at Otay 13.2. At Tecate, nothing.
🔴 2 · Tecate is not the easy crossing anymore
It used to be the back door. The numbers say that's over:
| January–July | Median |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 36.1 min |
| 2024 | 36.2 min |
| 2025 | 43.6 min |
| 2026 | 80.3 min |
It doubled. 122% more than 2023, and 84% more than last year.
For comparison: over the same period San Ysidro went up 27% and Otay 34%. Tecate is by far the hardest hit of the three.
And at Tecate there are two things going on, not one: it was already running 45% above 2025 back in January, before the other two moved, and then it jumped again in May. By July it was 169% above July of last year.
🟢 3 · The best day is WEDNESDAY, not Friday
This is where Tecate behaves differently from the other two, and the advice everyone repeats doesn't apply:
| Day | Median |
|---|---|
| Wednesday | 35.5 min ← best |
| Thursday | 37.2 min |
| Tuesday | 39.4 min |
| Friday | 41.7 min |
| Saturday | 50.0 min |
| Monday | 54.7 min |
| Sunday | 87.0 min ← worst |
At San Ysidro and Otay the best day is Friday. At Tecate it's Wednesday.
🔴 4 · And Sunday at Tecate is absurd
87 minutes against Wednesday's 35.5: two and a half times. It's the sharpest contrast of the three crossings.
A Sunday at Tecate is worse than a Sunday at Otay Mesa (74 minutes). Everything you save by crossing at Tecate, you give back on Sunday.
🟢 5 · On foot, Tecate is the best of the three
| Crossing | Pedestrian |
|---|---|
| Tecate | 6.3 min |
| San Ysidro | 18.5 min |
| Otay Mesa | 21.1 min |
Six minutes, historical median. If you're walking and it's anywhere near you, Tecate is still the best option on this border.
⚠️ But the pedestrian lane didn't fully escape either. January through July it went from 7.0 to 8.6 minutes (+23%). That's a minute and a half — nothing next to what happened to the car lane — but it isn't true that it stayed the same, and we're saying so because we published it wrong once ourselves.
The lanes at Tecate
| Lane | A normal day | A good day | A bad day | Worst seen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car (General) | 46.7 min | 32.6 min | 70.0 min | 213 min |
| Pedestrian | 6.3 min | 4.8 min | 8.6 min | 30.8 min |
| Commercial | 15.0 min | 9.3 min | 22.9 min | 105 min |
| SENTRI | ❌ doesn't exist |
"Good day" and "bad day" are the quartiles: one day in four comes out better than the good column, one in four worse than the bad one.
What this data does NOT tell you
It doesn't tell you what time of day. The history is full-day averages. Nobody can give you the hour yet — here's why.
🔴 It doesn't tell you why Tecate doubled. We measured it. We don't know the cause, and we won't invent one.
What we do know is how the damage is distributed. January through July, against the same period in 2025:
| Tecate lane | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car (General) | 43.6 min | 80.3 min | +84% |
| Pedestrian | 7.0 min | 8.6 min | +23% |
| Commercial | 13.8 min | 15.0 min | +9% |
The car lane took the hit, by a wide margin. The other two went up a little.
🔴 And the evidence that rules out general saturation isn't at Tecate — it's at Otay. There the freight lanes improved — FAST is 19% faster — while the car lanes got 34% worse. If it were volume or short staffing, freight would not have improved. The full measurement is here
It says nothing about southbound. There is no official source for waits into Tecate. We don't invent one.
And Tecate's commercial data has holes: 846 days reported out of roughly 1,266. It's the least reliable figure on this page, which is why we're telling you.
How to cross Tecate better
- Wednesday or Thursday, if you can pick the day
- 🔴 Never Sunday. It's 2.5× its own Wednesday and worse than a Sunday at Otay
- On foot it's the best on the border: 6 minutes
- If you have SENTRI, it's useless here. Consider Otay
- And check the number at the top before you leave, because 2026 is not behaving like the years before it

You might also want:
- Something changed in 2026 and only the car lanes broke
- If you cross on foot, forget what you know about the car line
